Effects of the Weak Polar Fields of Solar Cycle 23: Investigation Using OMNI for the STEREO Mission Period
نویسنده
چکیده
The current solar cycle minimum seems to have unusual properties that appear to be related to weak solar polar magnetic fields. We investigate signatures of this unusual polar field in the ecliptic near–Earth interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) for the STEREO period of observations. Using 1 AU OMNI data, we find that for the current solar cycle declining phase to minimum period the peak of the distribution for the values of the ecliptic IMF magnitude is lower compared to a similar phase of the previous solar cycle. We investigate the sources of these weak fields. Our results suggest that they are related to the solar wind stream structure, which is enhanced by the weak polar fields. The direct role of the solar field is therefore complicated by this effect, which redistributes the solar magnetic flux at 1 AU nonuniformly at low–to–mid heliolatitudes. 1 Space Sciences Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, California, USA email: [email protected] 2 Department of Earth and Planetary Science, University of California, Berkeley, California, USA 3 Space Sciences Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley, California, USA email: [email protected] 4 W. STEREO observations of interplanetary coronal mass ejections and prominence deflection during solar minimum period
In this paper we study the occurrence rate and solar origin of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) using data from the two Solar TErrestrial RElation Observatory (STEREO) and the Wind spacecraft. We perform a statistical survey of ICMEs during the late declining phase of solar cycle 23. Observations by multiple, well-separated spacecraft show that even at the time of extremely weak so...
متن کاملEvolution of Coronal Holes and Implications for High-Speed Solar Wind During the Minimum Between Cycles 23 and 24
We analyze coronal holes present on the Sun during the extended minimum between Cycles 23 and 24, study their evolution, examine the consequences for the solar wind speed near the Earth, and compare it with the previous minimum in 1996. We identify coronal holes and determine their size and location using a combination of EUV observations from SOHO/EIT and STEREO/EUVI and magnetograms. We find ...
متن کاملSolar Latitudinal Distribution of Solar Flares around the Sun and Their Association with Forbush Decreases during the Period of 1986 to 2003
Solar flare events of high importance were utilised to study solar latitudinal frequency distribution of the solar flares in northern and southern hemisphere for the solar cycle 22 to recent solar cycle 23. A statistical analysis was performed to obtain their relationship with sudden storm commencement (SSCs) and Forbush decrease events (Fd) of cosmic ray intensity. An 11-year cyclic variation ...
متن کاملExperimental investigation on the effect of phase change materils (PCM) in solar compression refrigeration cycle efficiency
Saving energy is one of the most important challenges of todaychr('39')s world. Reducing electrical energy consumption in compressed air systems is one of the essential requirements for designing these systems. When using domestic air conditioners (dual air conditioners) in very hot areas (Khuzestan) their performance decreases and electric current consumption increases. Therefore, the use of n...
متن کاملPOLAR investigation of the Sun—POLARIS
The POLAR Investigation of the Sun (POLARIS) mission uses a combination of a gravity assist and solar sail propulsion to place a spacecraft in a 0.48 AU circular orbit around the Sun with an inclination of 75◦ with respect to solar equator. This challenging orbit is made possible by the challenging development of solar sail propulsion. This first extended view of the highlatitude regions of the...
